The Crappy Leading the Crappy
Gateway, which has long suffered a reputation of selling crappy computers, just bought eMachines, a company famous for selling REALLY crappy computers. Way to go, Gateway!

Genetically Modifed Flower Detects Landmines
Anyone ever notice that with the state of technology today, the news stories are starting to sound more and more like Mad Libs?

Well, not exactly, but interesting nonetheless.

Boohbah?
Oh, good, yet another PBS show involving colorful, bloated alien blobby things. I have yet to figure out what this show is about, but based on the sound effects in their Flash site, it must involve lots of farting kittens. I bet the Teletubbies could kick the Boohbahs' asses.
John Paul II - Electric Boogaloo
Yesterday, a group of Polish breakdancers performed for the Pope and received his blessing. Sayeth the pontiff: "Artistic talent is a gift from God and whoever discovers it in himself has a certain obligation: to know that he cannot waste this talent, but must develop it." You can't make this stuff up, folks.

Democracy taking a back seat?
This is ridiculent. First, you may have heard that MoveOn.org planned to air a political ad during the Super Bowl. A winner has been chosen by the people, and MoveOn.org has enough money to pay for the ad, but now CBS is censoring the ad, saying that it's too "controversial". Hrm, those government ads linking Al-Qaeda to illegal drugs a few years ago were much more controversial, IMHO.
Goodbye, Captain :(
Captain Kangaroo has died. First, Mr. Rogers, now this... This is why all childhood heroes should be puppets!!! Puppets don't die!

DFilm Movie Maker
This is REALLY fun. Make your own quickie Flash Movie in about 2 minutes. The rather amusing Josh Cagan made this fantastic political satire with it. What can YOU make, boys and girls?

Dean sounds his barbaric YAWP over the roofs of the world
I used to think Howard Dean was a great upstart Democratic candidate, but now he's starting to seriously weird me out. In this short MP3 clip of his latest rant, he definitely sounds like he's losing it. He sounds more like a pro wrestler than a presidential candidate. Perhaps there's a reverse-Jesse-Ventura move in his future... Sure, he may have been against the war in Iraq, but he sounds like he would be pro-"tearing his enemies limb from limb with his bare hands then drinking their blood from their skulls". I thought life in Vermont would make someone mellow. Guess not.

Lego fanboy news
Some of you may have heard little snippets of Lego news lately, and thought about coming to your resident Ridiculent Lego expert for a little fact finding. Well, the Lego hoopla coincided with my emergency appendectomy, so here's the post-game wrap-up: 1. Lego is posting its third-ever and worst financial loss. 2. Lego will return to its "core". 3. They're going to be reviewing the way they do licensed tie-ins. Although they've been selling lots of Harry Potter and Star Wars sets, apparently the licensing costs are high, so the profits aren't as great. Spiderman Lego's just don't fit in their new focus. 4. At first, people thought Lego was dropping the Mindstorms line, but it turns out that they will keep it going. 5. There have been some color changes that have a bunch of Adult Fans of Lego (AFOL) in a tiff. 6. A picture of Lego minifig Biff Starling landed on Mars with the Spirit rover, and a picture of Sandy Moondust will land with Opportunity. Children will be able to follow the adventures of Biff and Sandy as the rovers explore Mars. 7. You can listen to an episode of The Connection on NPR that aired on January 13, 2004, that talked about Lego's future.
It's warmer on Mars than in New England...
The Spirit rover is reporting a temperature of 12 F at Gusev Crater right now, which is actally warmer than it is in the Northeast.

Solar Powered Geek Jacket
Wired reports on a new jacket designed with solar panels on the shoulders. The jacket can be used to charge numerous PDA's, phones, music players, and whatever else you cram in its 40+ pockets. Personally, I think this is pretty cool, but on the other hand, people geeky enough to need something like this don't tend to see a lot of sunlight.

World's smallest country may give up
Niue, off the coast of New Zealand, is currently the world's smallest sovereign state (unless you count SeaLand). They also run the ".nu" Top Level Domain. However, having just been hit by a massive cyclone, they may give up the whole Internet thing, as well as the whole being-a-country thing. Niue means, in the native language, "Look, there's a coconut!" Seriously (PDF).

What's wrong with the French?
This is kind of wacky (requires Windows Media)
Petster
Way, way, WAAAAAY before AIBO and Neo-Pets, there was Petster, and I actually had one. It was cool. Then some tiny plastic gear cracked and he would only go around in circles. And after taking him apart to diagnose that problem, I kind of, uh, couldn't put him back together. I miss Petster :(

See-Through Movies
The Mac-users amongst us (with "Quartz Extreme" capable video cards) can now achieve previously unattained levels of slackerdom by using new DVD software called "TransLucy". TransLucy allows you to play DVD movies on TOP of your other programs, as a translucent image. Spiffy!

Take the red pill and find out... Thanks to Foof for the link :)
Happy New Year and All
Yes, folks, I'm alive and well. All the holiday joy and festivities kept me away from the exciting world of bloggery. Thanks to Dave for covering for a bit, and for adding hideous pictures of quasi-dictators to the site while I wasn't looking. I hope you all had a good Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Festivus/Decemberween. To start out the new year, here's a bit of New Year's bloggy humor, courtesy of Diesel Sweeties.

What's running through your body?
A study on pollutants that exist in people has turned up flame retardants, DDT, and other lovely substances. The question now is, what do we do to avoid this stuff?
