Pimp My... Stapler?

Some guys are taking the vehicle "customization" craze and making a TV show where they "trick out" just about anything... Watch some "pilot" clips here.

Play 20 Questions Online

Here's a cool and silly application of artificial intelligence. Play 20 Questions against a computer. Everything the computer knows has been learned by players' responses. I've tested out "A Hubcap", "Cyberspace", "a Dream", and "Chives". It didn't get them all in 20 questions, but it got them all eventually.

Sims play Sims

The Sims in "The Sims 2" can play "The Sims".

I would love to learn about some of the AI behind The Sims. Can anyone point to a good resource?

It's time to take a stand!

Dear Laura (Click for Next Slide)

Don't know how to drop the bad news to your soon to be ex-girlfriend? Break up via PowerPoint.

(Sorry but, unfortunately, this site is a complete train wreck in anything but IE - don't even bother.)

Sorry again... The owner of this site decided he didn't like all the traffic this page was getting and replaced it with something quite, quite unpleasant... I've de-linked for your safety.

Pongmechanik

Pong may be incredibly primitive, but it *did* use transistors and semiconductors. As a completely electromechanical recreation (complete with wooden block-based sound processor, Pongmechanik has no need for such things. Check out the video.

The changing face of currency

Next up for redesign: the nickel. Speaking of which, has anyone seen the Lewis & Clark nickels? I've only seen one so far. I wonder if all of these re-designs help the economy because they encourage hording... think about how many citizens have one of each state quarter (I've only seen Florida and Texas this year, has anyone seen others?)

Hummer, Schmummer

The International 7300 CXT is a $100,000 big-rig/pickup truck which gets 6-10 miles per gallon of diesel and weighs as much as two Hummers. Just in case, you know, you need something in which to carry your H2 around town.

Hall of Technical Documentation Weirdness

The HTDW is one of those great time-sucking web-sites. I especially like the brutally honest instruction in Step 11, here.

One-sided fun for kids!

Infinity Loop

When I was a kid, we just had "Monkey Bars". Now kids can climb around on giant Möbius Strips. *sigh*

Yikes...

Here's a recent picture of Al Gore.. Somebody get this "cheerleader on acid" some Grecian Formula. here's the article if you're interested. (I like Gore - here's made a lot of insightful and important speeches which can be read at href="http://moveon.org">MoveOn.org, but I figured Ridiculent needed a little bipartisan bashing)

Microsoft for President?

Why does the following sound identical to the presidential campaign?

"Remember, Microsoft has never competed on the technical merits of its operating platforms. Not from the day IBM gave them a corner on the market until today. Given the quality of their products, that's probably a good thing for Redmond: DrDOS was a better DOS than MS-DOS, and OS/2 was far better, far more advanced than Win95.

"Microsoft has always preferred to compete with its core competencies: FUD, astroturfing, false advertising, rigged benchmarks, funding "independent" studies, being channeled by submissive scribes and sycophantic industry analysts, and attempting to freeze the market long enough for them to catch up with the competition." [from "Linux cannot compete with Longhorn"]

The "Retro Phone of the Future"

Pokia Handset

Tired of talking into a tiny rectangular box when you're on the cell? Pokia modifies old-fashioned "real" phone handsets so you can plug them into your cell phone and use it hands- (if not shoulders-) free. There's even a Bluetooth model - cool!

Too bad other countries can't vote in American elections

30 out of 35 countried would prefer Kerry, too bad they can't vote.

Genesis crashes

Oh no......... it really sounded like this was going to go off without a hitch. Too bad we couldn't somehow connect to this using the space station, it seems that re-entry is one of the toughest parts of space travel.

Looking back...

That whole 'old' thing has got me thinking, and I'd like to pose this question to the general audience:

At this point in your life, what are some things you wish you had done, but now don't have the chance? Or what do you wish you hadn't done? What things are you really glad that you did, or didn't do, when you had the chance?

Feel free to post your comments anonymously.

Presidential Discombobulator

Bush's eyes + Kerry's mouth + Cheney's hair = John McCain

(Plus, the Processing language is pretty cool on its own)

01D...

The other day, I was rolling down the hill at the park behind my house with Tami and some friends, and a group of high-school aged kids goaded us on. Then one of them said, "Hey, wait, those are old people!" To which my friend Evan retorted, "We're... not... old!"

However, perhaps this link backs up that kid's claim... the members of this year's Class of 2008 were born in 1986.

I have to wonder... those of us born in the mid-70's had Smurfs, Star Wars, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and the beginning of TMNinjaT... what did this generation have? Besides Pokemon?

Insightful blog

This blog is a lot more insightful than many others that I've read, in which I sometimes feel like asking, "cat got your tongue?"

Where did ya leave the keys?

From Cheney's speech:

"Tonight, uranium, centrifuges, and plans for nuclear weapons that were once hidden in Libya are locked up and stored away in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, never again to be a danger to Americans."

It doesn't take much reading between the lines to figure out where to go if you happen to be looking for uranium, centrifuges, or plans for nuclear weapons.

"Never again to be a danger to Americans"... "except for those poor souls in Oak Ridge, TN who couldn't prevent the construction of a containment facility in their backyard."

Natural phenomenon... or aliens?

NewScientist is reporting that one of SETI's telescopes has picked up a signal that could be either a natural phenomemon, or a signal from an alien world.

In other news, I was watching "Star Trek: First Contact" last night, in which Zephram Cochrane's first warp flight occurs on April 5, 2063. That's less than 60 years away... anyone think it's possible?

Update: Wil Wheaton had pretty much the same entry in his blog, complete with the Zephram Cochrane reference!
