New Yahoo! search tool
Mindset is a new Yahoo! search tool that allows you to filter results on an axis of "shopping" (i.e., commercial) vs "researching" (i.e., non-commercial) sources. For example, suppose you search for "twinkies". Moving the slider to the shopping end, the top search results that talk about comparing bargain prices. Towards the researching end, you'll see an article on deep-dried Twinikes, and a Wikipedia entry. In the middle (default), Hostess's site comes up first. Interestingly, if you try searching for JFugue, sliding between "shopping" and "researching" brings the same result to the top!

A blast from the past
Remember that woman who sued McDonald's because she scalded herself on their hot coffee? Well, a recent post on Slashdot describes that whole incident in a little more detail and, y'know, it makes sense to me now and I no longer think that the woman was being arbitrarily or excessively litigious.
I'm sorry, sir, but your hair violates my intellectual property rights
The combover was patented in 1975. I'm speechless.
Northeast has dumbest drivers
According to this article, 1 out of 10 drivers would fail a driver's test, and it's even worse in the northeast - Rhode Island is the worst, Massachusetts comes in second-worse. My contention is that we need to bend the rules a little, to successfully navigate these horse-cart streets, so a couple of wrong answers are excusable... right? What would be more interesting is the number of traffic accidents per capita in various parts of the state. Perhaps the rules are wrong.

Beware, Pedophiles
That 14 year old girl you're trying to pick up in that AOL chat room just might be... Shaquille O'Neal.

Another TV ad
It's a big day for ads, apparently... here's burger joint "Carl's Jr"'s new ad featuring Paris Hilton. I really don't know if this is work-safe or not. You can also view the longer 60-second spot at spicyparis.com, which is quite possibly the only website ever devoted to a particular commercial. OTOH, I've never heard of "Carl's Jr" before, and now I have (and I'm also spreading the meme), so I guess the ad is successful in its notoriety. I just wish they got someone attractive to be in the ad.
Okay, it's been too quiet...
I've been refraining from a general "Ooh, who saw 'Revenge of the Sith' and wants to talk about it?" post, but this review was too funny not to post on good ol' Ridiculento. Plus, there's the script, so those of you who have already seen it can take a look through and see all of the scenes that were cut out (for the record: WAY too many scenes that seemed to be necessary, mythologically. Maybe keeping them in would have made the movie too long or too complex, but without them the saga remains partly incomplete)
Brilliant TV ad
Stunt City (Quicktime .MOV) - One of those ads that is so clever, you'll probably never remember what it's actually for. Brilliant, nonetheless. Via vowe.

OMG, what happened to her hair?
The Picture of Everything
Have you seen The Picture of Everything? No, I'm not talking about some metaphysical, hypothetical "big picture", I'm talking about this - a drawing of everything. You know that kid who sat in the back of class drawing various pop culture icons, in no particular context - just sort of standing around? Howard Hallis is clearly their god.

Stick Figures in Peril
The Stick Figures in Peril Flickr Pool is quite amusing. This looks like a terrible way to die.

TrueDater.com
"Join thousands who use TrueDater.com to share reviews of whether the information in people's online dating profiles is true or not." Boy, I wish I had this service back when I was doing the Internet Dating Thing. Boy, I'm glad no one else did.

Time Traveler convention at MIT
There will be a Time Traveler convention at MIT this Saturday - and technically, it's the only time traveler convention that ever really needs to happen. Unfortunately, there's not enough room to allow anyone else from the present.

It slices! It dices! It toasts!
David "Elsewhere", Robot Dance Guy
This video has been online since 2001, but I hadn't seen it in a long time and dug it up again, and maybe it's new to you. It's a clip of a guy named David "Elsewhere" Bernal who performs what some may call "freestyle dancing" or breakdancing but I've never seen anyone do quite what he does, and it's simply amazing. Ignore the kid in the white shirt at the beginning of the clip. I dunno who he is. Wait for the guy in the orange shirt. That's him. Want more? There's an interview with him here, with a link to another video. (Warning: ad banners of questionable work-safeness on this site).
Golden Palace Casino strikes again
This time they've bought Pope Benedict XVI's old car. This article is clueless, it talks about Golden Palace Casino as if it had never been heard of before. Of course, Ridiculent readers will recognize it as the winning bidder for the grilled cheese sandwich with the likeness of the Virgin Mary, and the "Time Machine" that looked like an old water heater ("I bought this tomorrow" / "Thanks for the fast payment!")

StealthSwitch desktop cloaking device
It must be really weird working for the StealthSwitch company, especially in the QA department, considering they sell a device to help you not get caught goofing off at work. The "About" page is very interesting. The founder talks about how the employees of a company he ran were always getting caught slacking off, thus inspiring him to develop a device to make their slacking much easier. What a strange world we live in.

$10,000 Inflatable TV?
Not exactly, but whoever brings this " Outdoor Theater System" to my next pool party gets an extra cheeseburger from the grill - no charge!
